The Tinwald fair lived up to its reputation of presenting a collection of Romneys which in numbers and quality is probably unique in the country. The yarding totalled 29.063 head, compared with 30.125 last year, and probably -hree-quarters were Romneys or Romney-cross sheep.

After a generally favourable season for feed in the district and with many of the sheep coming off irrigated country, the standard of the offering was fully Up to the high level set in previous years. Almost without exception sheep were well grown and in good condition.

One pen realised £5 5s and another £5, and some 19 pens realised 90s or better, and 92 reached 80s or better. Sale Firmed The sale opened quietly with values for Romneys not much better than late market rates, but as the sale progressed. the market firmed markedly, with comparable sheep making several shillings more than was paid earlier in the day, and the market remained strong until the end. Over the whole eight hours’ selling, only about five pens were passed.

The best Romneys realised 87s to 975, with one sale at £5 and another at £5 ss. good made from 78s to 86s, average 70s to 775, and others 57s to 635. At these rates 19 pens sold yesterday averaged 17s
