INGLEWOOD’S NEW SIRE

Afghanistan A Good Winner

Afghanistan, a six-year-old son of Partial, has been bought in England to join We Don’t Know at Mr Robin Adair’s Inglewood Stud at Kaiiapoi.

He has won seven races from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half, and was bought soon after he won the Edinburgh Gold Cup, in which he was giving away more than a stone to toe field.

“Good sort” has been the cryptic description given by a leading racing English annual in dealing with Afghanistan’s racing at three and four years.

Partial, sire of Afghanistan, sired Psidium and Pardao, which were first and third respectively in the 1961 English Derby.

Partial, second on the English sires’ list that year, was got by Pharis from Ariargatis, winner of the French Oaks.

Partial’s brother, Andan, won 16 races, including the French Derby, the Prix de I’Anc de Triomphe, and toe Epsom Coronation Cup.

Ardan sired Hard Sauce, winner of six races, and sire of Hard Ridden, which won the English Derby and the Irish 2000 Guineas. Afghanistan’s dam is Maliki. by Persian Gulf, and is a descendant of Pretty Polly.

My Pal, which was brought to New Zealand with We Don’t Know to stand at Inglewood, will probably spend tlie next two seasons on lease to a North Wand stud.

The purchase of Afghanistan in England was arranged by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. and toe English bloodstock agent, Mr Keith Ikeeman. GREYMOUTH XKXSEY CWB SUMMER MEETING FEBRUARY M AND 23, 1963.
