Athletics PROVINCIAL RECORD

Bell Sets New Figure

E. Bell, of the Christchurch Technical Club, failed by .Isec to equal the New Zealand junior half-mile record in a special attempt in Ashburton last evening. On a perfect track. Bell finished strongly in Im in 54.25ec after running on his own for 300 yards. Bell had to be content with a Canterbury record, for the time was .3sec faster than that set last Saturday when he won the Canterbury junior half-mile title. It was the third time this season he had lowered the Canterbury record and the second time he had .done so in Ashburton. K. Jago, of Technical, set a fast pace for the first quartermile, and Bell was content with third place behind C. McFadden (Toe H). McFadden led Bell at the end of the first lap, which was completed in Msec. However, McFadden tired early in the last lap, and Bell passed him with 300 yards to go. Bell finished strongly. In second place was B. Welch (Ashburton), who ran his fastest 880 yards in Imin 57.95ec. Another Canterbury record was set by G. Drennan (Ashburton) in the under 17 men’s 120 yards hurdles. His time of 15.9 sec bettered the old record by .Isec. In a solo run in the men’s 440 yards hurdles, 1- Behrnes (Ashburton) ran the distance in 58.8 sec.
