NEW COMMODORE APPOINTED
P. And 0. Orient Fleets The first commodore of the recently combined P. and O and Orient fleets is Captain L. A. Hill, who was appointed last month. Before his appointment he commanded the PeninsuAa and Oriental Steam Navigatim Company’s flagship, the Canberra. Captain HiU, who was born in 1903, was a cadet at Pangbourne Nautical College before serving bis apprenticeship with the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ltd. In 1924 he joined the P. and O. Company as fourth officer in the Sardinia. During the war he served in the Royal Naval Reserve and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross tor dangerous and successful experimental work in dealing with enemy mines. He returned to the company in 1948 as first officer in ’he Ranchi, and in 1960 was appointed staff captain of the Strathnaver. Later he commanded other ships Of the line, including the Iberia, the Stratheden, and the Cbusan. In 1952 Captain HiU was promoted to captain, R.N.R., and subsequently served on a committee of inquiry into the future of the reserve.
