‘New Congo Rebellion’
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) ELISABETHVILLE. Feb. 12. Reports reaching Elisabethville tonight said an organised rebellion against the Congolese central Government had broken out in South Kasai—the Congo’s ‘‘diamond state.”
The reports said supporters of the self - styled ’’King” Albert Kalonji—who is in exile in Switzerland—were fighting central Government troops and terrorising the population. An estimated 200,000 persons have taken to the bush. Towns and villages were reported to be deserted. Eight chiefs who support the central Government have disappeared while touring pro*Kalonji areas. The reports said it was feared they had been killed and eaten. In New; York, a United Nations spokesman said the United Nations had received no information that might confirm reports of an organised rebellion.
The spokesman said there had been tribal strife in the area, but no reports had been received from United Nations sources of major trouble along the lines mentioned in news dispatches.
