UNLAWFUL FISHING
Gaffed Trout; Fined £l4 (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA. Feb. 11. Leslie Thomas Longstaff, a 22-year-old Inglewood contractor, gaffed a trout at Fairy Springs in the early hours of December 15 to prove to his friends he could catch fish, the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court was told today. Appearing for Longstaff who admitted using a gaff to take a trout and fishing in prohibited hours. Mr R. J. Barry said the offence was committed after Longstaff and his friends had had a luckless day fishing. Longstaff went to the springs, which were not well known to him. and gaffed a large, fat trout. “It was a light-hearted venture to prove to his friends he could catch fish,” Mr Barry submitted. Mr P. J. Burstall. assistant conservator of wild life at Rotorua, said the defendant was seen by the proprietor of the springs using a gaff in a pool. The next day, a trout was found in grass near the pool. On the charge of using a gaff. Longstaff was convicted by Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., and fined £10; and on the charge of fishing in prohibited hours he was convicted and fined £4.
