Pedestrian Crossings

Sir, —As a visitor, I agree entirely with the remark of the Mayor of Riccarton published in your issue of today. Not only are many motorists here a menace to the pedestrians, but they are also a danger to others on the road. On several occasions I have nearly been bumped by other drivers because they obviously did not anticipate that I would be stopping to give the pedestrians the right of way to which they were entitled. Unfortunately, some pedestrians, probably because of previous experiences, get on to the crossing and then stand to see what is going to happen. This could complicate the position but if the driver always stopped, these pedestrians would regain their confidence. A strict observance of the law is required in the North Island and it should be enforced here.—Yours, etc., AUCKLAND VISITOR. February 12, 1963.
