CRICKET Outright Win By Wellington In Rothman's Tournament

Wellington was the only team to win outright when the first round of the Rothman’s under-23 tournament ended yesterday, and its victory was achieved with only two balls of the last over unbowled. In this match the batting of both sides lacked lustre, but Wellington’s win was a reasonable reward for the splendid bowling of J. St. J. Parson and A. R. Taylor. Otago beat Northern Districts on the first innings, and Canterbury, set a very difficult task by Central Districts —l6l runs in an hour—gave the day’s most spectacular display in reaching 50 in 19 minutes; but the effort could not be sustained, and Central Districts took first-innings points.

Team points are:—Wellington 10, Otago 5, Central Districts 5, Northern Districts 1, Canterbury 1, Auckland 0. Although the weather In the afternoon was fine and warm, play was delayed in the morning in all three games, mainly because of the uncertain foothold for the bowlers. The pitches were not as lively as on the first day, but they still offered the pace bowlers lift at disturbingly varied heights, and there was quite prodigious turn for the spinners. In such circumstances confident batting could not be expected, but for all that the batting was rather disappointing The first player to make a half-century was P. G. Coman (Canterbury), closely

followed by K. Campbell (Otago). Others who scored 30 or more were J. E. Hamel and P. Neil (Wellington), L. Mountain and C. Beach (Northern Districts), D. G. Bums (Central Districts), and P. B. Truscott (Canterbury).

Parson, bowling throughout Auckland’s second innings, took six wickets in a very fine display, and the Canterbury left-arm spinner, M. G. Lester, made his tally 10 for the match.

Today Wellington will play Canterbury at Elmwood Park; Otago will play Auckland at St. Andrew’s College; and Northern Districts will meet Central Districts at Ilam.

Auckland v. Wellington (127) (59/4)

Interest tn this game was sustained throughout the day, lor Wellington had a desperate struggle before taking the firstinnings lead. The Auckland pace bowlers. S. Baddeley and S. Kohlasse. used reduced runs for some time because of the slippery turf, but the Wellington batsmen had to watch and wait for the runs to come. J. E. Hammel batted attractively, and nearly all the others contributed something of material value, but at lunch the score was 113 for seven. A. R. Taylor went Immediately after the interval, but D L. Paetz, who batted with great determination, and P. Tindill saw their side through by scoring 25 for the ninth wicket. Although Auckland batted badly, there was always the prospect of someone staying in just long enough to make Wellington's task impossible; the runs-minutes ratio was never decisive, either way. H. Schuster made some brisk runs early, and later P. Davidson batted capably, but Wellington’s fine bowling and keen fielding swept away the rest of the batting. Parson had five overs at his full and not inconsiderable pace before shortening his run and cutting the ball quite viciously away from the lefthanders, of whom Auckland had more than enough. Parson, all aggression, was accurate and lively throughout his stint of 20 consecutive overs. Taylor was also fast, and Paetz, with his lifting, turning off-breaks, helped to keep the batsmen in subjection. Neal's innings put Wellington on the way to victory, and it was Taylor’s great hit which clinched the business. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings .. .. 127 Second Innings T. Jarvis, b Parson .. o H. Beuth showed no inclination to suc?„YJ nb as a number 11 should. When Otago began its second innings badly, Northern had a slim chance of victory, but Campbell, a batsman of some accomplishment, held steady and towards the end used his feet well to attack the bowling calmly and successfully. Although K. Kennedy took onlv two wiekets. his left-arm spin bowling appealed: he had length and direction, and a sharp turn from the bat.

When Mountain and Beach came together In a sort of Churchilhan act of defiance Northern Districts again had a chance, for they scored 56 together in 43 minutes; 50 minutes from time, Northern needed 100 runs, and still had nine wickets standing, a fine position for an all-out assault. But the assault brought too many casualties, and that was that. Both Mountain and Beach both made many good, clean strokes, although the pitch was still anything but a batsman’s paradise. Central Districts (34/8) (185) An uninspiring day’s cricket was brought to life tn the hour when Canterbury launched a furious assault on the Central Districts’ bowling in an attempt to score 161 runs tor an outright victory. P. B. Truscott produced the most exhilarating batting of the match in scoring 47 runs in only 25 minutes and gave Canterbury a definite chance of winning, a chance dispelled when Truscott was dismissed, with 35 minutes remaining. The middle-order batting again collapsed, and R. M. Gearry and C. Reid had to defend desperately for half an hour to save the match. Earlier in the afternoon Canterbury had been dismissed for 93. 72 runs behind on the first innings. P. G. Coman, without showing his previous assurance, added a further 18 runs and batted for 97 minutes in all. Coman pulled and drove powerfully and, with Gearry, seemed to be building the total to respectable proportions. However, J. R. Smith and R. O. Collinge, the medium-fast bowlers, each took another two wickets and put Central Districts in a sound first-innings position. When Central Districts batted again, they showed little inclination to score quick runs against some accurate medium-fast swing bowling by the Canterbury captain, B. H. Hopkins. Bowling into a stiff breeze, Hopkins had all the batsmen worried and reaped his just reward. M. L. Ryan bowled throughtfully. but was again unlucky, and M. G. Lester benefited from some judicious shots. G. D. Beer again batted purposefully. displaying some pleasing cover-drives and powerful pulls, and D. G. Bums played sensibly tor an unbeaten 31 in 40 minutes. The declaration seemed to be a little delayed, but ft could be that the Central Districts' captain remembered the parallel occasion last season when Canterbury scored at a furious rate to win outright.
