SCIENCE BLOCK AT COLLEGE
Labour Shortage Causes Delay
The new science block at the Christchurch Technical College, expected to have been ready for use by the end of last year, is still not finished. The foreman of the job and all but two carpenters have resigned.
The men were aware that the company they were working for was in liquidation, the principal of the college (Mr D. W. Lyall) said at a meeting of the college’s board of managers last evening. A report from the architects said the difficulties of the construction company concerned had become more apparent in the last two months, after the men had resigned. As a result, the finishing work had been extremely slow, and this trend had spread to the sub-con-tractors, the report said.
“The position is a bit alarming,” said Mr G. Manning. The first floor of the new building is almost completed except for a small amount of work in the library and the connexion of the fire-alarm system. The architects’ report said the ground floor was well on the way, but it would be two or three weeks before it could be occupied.
