NKOMO IN COURT
Remand On Bail (NJ!P.A.-R*ut«r—Copyright) RUSAPE (Southern Rhodesia), Feb. 11. The former leader of the banned Zimbabwe African People's Union, Joshua Nkomo, was remanded on bail for a week when be appeared in Court today charged undec the Law and Order (Maintenance) Act, Three other African Nationalist leaders who appeared with him were also remanded. AU four appeared on three charges of taking part in an illegal procession, assaulting, obstructing or hindering the police and contravention of the Rusape native local regulations. Another nationalist. Mr George Nyandoro, was charged under the Law and Order (Maintenance) Act last night but police said today he had been released.
Police set up road blocks in Rusape in case of trouble when Mr Nkomo and his three colleagues appeared in Court.
Opposing bail, Inspector T. Cox said wherever the four had been “unlawful crowds have gathered.” He said the maximum penality for obstructing, assaulting or hindering the police was imprisonment not exceeding 10 years. Asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say, Nkomo replied: "We would like to conduct our own defence. We should like to prepare for it.” Nkomo promised he and the other three would see no offence was committed while they were on bail. Nyandoro and three other Africans were also charged with taking part in an iUegal procession and were remanded for a week. The other three were David Charangwa, Oswald Nakombe and Dickson Madzwinga.
