Women’s Bowls Fifty-two Fours Have Two Wins On First Day

Heavy overnight rain waterlogged many of the greens for the first day of the fours championship at the New Zealand women’s bowling tournament. Because of the late start the games were shortened to 18 heads instead of the usual 21.

In the afternoon the greens livened up and some good bowling was seen. Players who favour a heavy green were in their element for the first round, but as the greens speeded up in the afternoon they were struggling to find their weight and green.

There were one or two eurpriaes. Mrs Opie (Hawera) went down in her first game to Mrs Lyng (Burwood), 2018, but won her next, 20-14, •gainst Mrs Derbidge (Opawa).

Mrs Child (Tainui), runnerup in the singles, lost both her games and will now have to win the next four to qualify. A prominent skip and previous title winner, Mrs Winstanley (Marewa), had a runaway victory, 22-10, in her first game against Mrs Ash (Fendalton). In her next game she failed and went down, 18-12, to Mrs Roberts (Lyttelton). Mrs Tricker (Lower Hutt), who is defending her title, had little trouble in her games yesterday. She won the first, 20-15, over Mrs McCree (Dallington), and then raced away to a good win, 26-12, over Mrs Marshall (Linwood).

Mrs Boote (Riccarton), the last local player to survive the pairs, was hard pressed to win her second game yesterday when she met Mrs Johnstone (Wyndham), and only managed to scrape home, 17-16. In her first game she accounted for Mrs Gilligan (Umaru), 24-12. Mrs Nankivell, a very prominent local skip, went down in her first game, 1713, to Mrs Surridge (South Brighton), but made amends in the next when she beat Mrs Happer (Dunsandel), 22-12.

Mrs Nicol (Mangakino), a previous title winner, had two good wins. At the conclusion of play yesterday, 52 of the 178 fours which started play had won both games.
