GREENKEEPERS’ CONFERENCE

Opening Day At Shirley About 50 golf greenkeepers from all over New Zealand met at the Shirley course yesterday for the first day of a three-day greenkeepers’ conference of the New Zealand Institute for Turf Culture. In the morning the conference was opened by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), who said that with the continuing increase in population it was essential to provide even greater areas for sport Other speakers at the opening were the chairman of the New Zealand Institute for Turf Culture (Mr G. H. Saxley), the president of the Golf Greenkeepers’ Association (Mr W. E. P. Butler), Mr C. J. Ward, representing the New Zealand Golf Council, and the president of the Christchurch Golf Club (Mr O. A. Y. Johnston). After the opening, a paper on the improvement of turf grasses was presented by Dr. L. Corkhill, and a paper on soil sterilisation was presented by Mr A. J. McNeur. After an inspection of the course and greens, a paper on watering of greens was presented by Mr W. R. Lobb. Papers which will be presented today concern a comparison of New Zealand and Australian turf problems, the effects on turf composition of environment and management, and research at Milson. There will be an inspection of the Hagley Golf Club’s course in Hagley Park.
