Crown To Test
Validity
(NJZ. Preu Association)
AUCKLAND, January 31.
The Attorney-General has instituted proceedings in the Supreme Court at Auckland to test the eligibility of Mr T. H. Pearce to hold the city council seat to which he was declared elected after the October elections.
The hearing has been set down to begin on March 5. After the municipal elections, the Auditor-General i Mir A. D. Burns) ruled that Mr Pearce was ineligible because his financial interest in a contract between the council and the firm of which he is a director exceeded the permissible limit for a local body member. This contract has been surrendered and Mr Pearce has since formally taken his seat at a full council meeting.
