Racing NILARCO DEAD
Leg Broken In Gallop
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Jan. 31
Another outstanding racehorse—Nilarco —broke a sesamoid bone today. But unlike the New Zealand champion. Even Stevens, which shattered a sesamoid in a gallop on Tuesday, the new casualty had to be destroyed. Nilarco, a gelding, and one of Victoria’s best stayers in recent years, broke the sesamoid and cannon bones in the near foreleg when galloping at Mentone. He was having his final gallop in preparation for the weight-for-age Blarney Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, which was to have been his first race this time up. Nilarco’s main mission was to have been the £5OOO Queen’s Cup on February 23. Nilarco had the good record of 58 starts, 16 wins, three seconds, 9J thirds for £30,788 in stakes. He won the V.R.C. St Leger Stakes, the V.R.C. and A.J.C. Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the AJ.C. Autumn Stakes.
