FALSEHOOD WINS FORBURY HEAT

Lordship Third After Breaking At Start

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, January 31.

Falsehood gained his second win at the meeting when he proved a class above his rivals in the Third Qualifying Heat of die Dunedin Festival Cup at Forbury Park tonight. The Fallacy gelding won with a good deal in hand by two lengths from a solid finisher, Jay Ar, with another length back to the disappointing hot favourite, Lordship. Falsehood has firmed in favour for the final on Saturday as a result of his win, but it is unlikely that he will displace Lordship from the position of favourite for the event.

Falsehood, which has attracted the interest of officials of Yonkers Raceway, sprinted the II furlongs in the smart time of 2min 54 4-ssec. His time was l-ssec slower than that of Lordship which took time honours in the race.

Falsehood has now had 17 starts this season for seven wins and nine platings. On the only occasion on which he finished out of the money he met with serious interference.

Lordship’s performance was most disappointing. He broke at the start and then went three wide for two furlongs after the mile post Even so, the pace was not particularly strong, and he made no impression in the straight.

Grouse assured herself a start in the final when she led from end to end in the fourth qualifying heat. She set a sound pace and equalled Falsehood’s winning time in the other heat. Grouse was the second outsider of the field and paid £23 12s 6d for a win.

Grouse’s performance was r ,ost pleasing, as she had been unreliable at the barrier in many of her more recent races, after some splendid racing in the spring. Sirrah made amends for a first-night failure when he beat Aiblins narrowly in the Kew Handicap, the first leg of the double.

There was a dead-heat for first between Cairnbrae and Avante in the second leg. the Royal Handicap. The SirrahCairrbrae double paid £l6 Is 6d for fl and the Sirrah —Avante double paid £l4 ss.

Jay Ar tangled for a stride or two at the start of the Third Qualifying Heat, while Lordship broke and lost 12 yards. Jay Ar was in front from Urrall before the end of a furlong, but half a furloc« later Gildirect was sent dear and the pace appeared to slacken.

Falsehood sprinted up near the mile post, with Lordship being forced wide as he attempted to improve. Itocdship, after being three wide for two furlongs, joined Gildirect with less than six furlongs to run after Falsehood had taken control with more than seven furlongs left.

Lordship drifted back more than a length leaving the straight and was then on the outside of Jay Ar. Gildirect moved out wh -n Lordship improved near the two furlongs and they followed Falsehood into the straight with Jay Ar, Master Alan and Urrall prominent.

Falsehood did not look like being caught and he won easily by two lengths. Jay Ar finished boldly over the final furlong to beat Lordship by a length for second, with a short length to Master Alan, which shaded Gildirect, Smokeaway and Urrall, with a gap to Invicta. FOURTH HEAT Scottish Light broke and Oreti and Dandy Briar were slow at the start of the Fourth Qualifying Heat Grouse made her best beginning for some time and quickly reached the front.

being trailed by Gay Baron and Samantha at the end of a furlong. The field raced in single file in the middle stages, with Oreti and Dandy Briar at the rear. Dandy Briar improved to be third at the five furlongs, with Oreti next on the inside of Samantha. Sun Chief was next, with Ballista three wid; and Scottish Light last. Gay Baron tangled slightly, checking Oreti, and Scottish Light to a lesser degree, near the two furlongs. Grouse continued in front to the straight, with Ballista, Dandy Briar, Gay Baron and Samantha right behind. Grouse was not seriously challenged in the run home and she won handily by two lengths, from Ballista, which ran on boldly. Samantha ran out the last furlong better than any of the others to take third a length back, with a length and a half to Oreti and Scottish Light Sun Chief showed little dash and was sixth, clear of Dandy Briar and Gay Baron. The weather was fine, though cool. There was an attendance of 7389. On-course the totallsator handled £73,830 10s, including £.7858 10s on the double, compared witi. £81,104 last year.
