In spite of her disappointing form since she won at EllersUo in the spring, Dashing Star has strong appeal in the Barry Memorial Handicap, first leg of the double at Makara tomorrow, when the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting opens. Dashing Star’s best form is superior to that of any of her opponents and she showed at Ellerslie last week she had not lost her speed. Fairenda, rather unlucky both days at Wairoa, and Senor, are other likely northern candidates. Sir Loin and Kawere raced pleasingly at Wairoa.
The stablemates, Aqaba and Kawera, have accepted for both legs of the double, but it is expected that Aqaba will attempt to repeat last year’s success in the Gisborne Handicap. The Answer, For Free. Summer Spray and Red Forest all raced like improvers at Wairoa. but the best was not seen of Ompy last Saturday. She hung badly and had to be eased up. The roomier Makaraka track on which she won a double in May should suit her better. The weather is fine and the track should be firm and fast.
