Week Brings Unexpected Rise In Price Of Sugar

(From Our Grocery Correspondent)

Main news of the week has been an unexpected announcement by the New Zealand Sugar Company of a rise in the price at sugar. Distributors in the South Island will have to pay £3 15s a ton more. The company says the rise has been caused by an increase in the price for raw sugar. In some outer areas of Christchurch the retail price of sugar may rise by id per lib. So far none of the firms manufacituring foods with a high sugar content, such as jellies, has given any indication of higher prices, but it is likely that summer stocks of these lines have already been packed. The continued summer weather is boosting sales of cordial extracts, jellies, mayonnaise preparations and other lines. Pineapple Juice.—W. Gregg and Company, Ltd., have advised their distributors that they will shortly be distributing a shipment of "Haro" pineapple juice in a 121 ounc* can. The quantity produced is approximately the same as last year and only one delivery is expected from Rarotonga. The price suggested is Is Bd, which is the same as previously. There will be no crushed pineapple this year, but a Rarotongan fruit salad in a 13 ounce can will be ready for distribution * little later.

Lentils.—According to advice recently received regarding the lentil market, a definite increase has been noted. This has been brought about by the cold weather in Europe and increased demand over the last two or three weeks. The increase is approximately £4 per ton. Philippine Coconut.—About 18 months ago New Zealand importers started to buy coconut from the Philippine Islands. This was brought about mainly by the higher quotation* being received from Ceylon where the market has remained firm for some time. Now, recent quotations from the Philippines show that the market has eased there and in the last week or so it has fallen by approximately 12s per cwt. A short time ago coconut from other sources came on to the market at extremely low prices and this could be the reason for the Philippine market easing. Floor Cleaner.—The marketers of Johnson’s Floor Pol-

(she* will shortly be releasing a floor cleaner under the brand of "Kleen Floor.” This is a liquid which is broken down with water and Is designed to remove the old wax polish. It can also be used tor many other general purpose job* such as cleaning walls, paintwork and other household cleaning. It is expected to retail at 3s Id per bottle.

Sunsilk Price Increase.—lt was recently reported in this column that th* price of Sunsilk hair shampoo had been increased to 4*. The Increase is Id a bottle, not 3d as was stated in our earlier report.
