Sir Edmund Hillary said at his Sydney hotel tonight he “would prefer not to comment” on a statement in a Ijook soon to be published that he was quietly dropped on his return to New Zealand from the Antarctic because he was a “bad boy” in his undiplomatic dash to the South Pole ahead of Britain’s Sir Vivian Fuchs. Sir Edmund Hillary said he did not know the book, "Opposite Poles,” by Douglas McKenzie, and added that he did not think he knew the author.
Sir Edmund Hillary knew Mr McKenzie when he was a member of the New Zealand expedition in the summer of 1957-58 When Mr McKenzie flew to Depot 480 on the New Zealand party’s route to the Pole, he was pressed into service as an additional tractor driver He was a member of Sir Edmund Hillary’s party until it reached Depot 700 and was on the trail for 220 miles Then he flew back to Scott Base to resume his duties as a correspondent
