Quality And Variety Mark Gladiolus Show
Bloom* and flowers of surprising quality and variety in spite of the unfavourable weather last week, mark the Canterbury Horticultural Society's annual; gladiolus •how. Tbe show is in the Tarttner Hall and will conclude this evening. The efforts of competitors in producing entries of high cotour and exceHemt appearance after the hot, blustery nor*-west weather, were praised by judges of sll section* yesterdayThe waning of the premier prue by a New Zealand variety of gladioUua, was a feature of tbe show. It is some years since a local species b*s gained this distinction. Tbe bloom, entered by J. Jpcdon. of Christchurch, is from a species developed to the North Island. Mr W. A. PoUard (Christchurch), who judged the formal class in the gtediokus aectton. said even in tbe best of seasons be bad seldom seen a bloom to equal this exhibit. r ” Entries totalled 754. compared with 680 last year. Tbe number of new exhibitors drew comment from judges, particularly in the decorative and cut flower classes. Mrs L. W. Robinson (Christchurch), judge of tbe decorative desses, said tbe standard of begxmers’ entries was outstanding and some <rf time newcomers gained awards iri open ctasses. Tbe colour of the majority of entries was rwrirahly good, she said.T Exceotidnal variety marks the cutftewer section which is the tergeat in the riaow. It too, attracted many new exbibitorx a tth entries of sur■*£■■£sa.’a. - tries were riigbtiy less than last yta, but quality and variety compared more than favourably with those of other year*, said tbe president of the National Dahlia Society (Mr J. X Farthing) Several new varieties of dabba, some of them exhibited only two or three times before in New Zealand, are displayed.
