HIRING OF TAXIS
Double Fares An Offence Taxi-drivers in Christchurch who double hire are breaking the law and are liable to prosecution, according to the Christchurch City Council's Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) yesterday. The Transport Act passed by Parliament last session makes provision far double hiring in certain circumstances, but this does not come into effect until May 1 this year. “If we receive a complaint that a taxi-driver has doubled up on his fare we take action. The original hirer is entitled to take someone with him in the taxi, but two separate fares are not permitted,** said Mr Thomas. Special provisions were made for taxis taking passengers to rape meetings or the CbiitoibUW Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show, said? Mr Thomas. In these instances, individual set fares were payable by all taxi passengers. Mr Thomas said double hiring was permitted during the war years as an emergency measike. but it had been an offence ever since.
