Magistrate’s Court Two Men For Trial On Joint Charge Of Burglary
Vernon John Paintin. aged 29, a workman, and Thomas Walker, aged 27, a cleaner, wen committed for trial at the next tatting of the Supreme Court on a joint change of breaking and entering the premises of Lane, Newve, and Wantoyn, 90 Hereford street, on December 18 with intent to commit a crime, by Messrs R. H. Harris and W. E. Odds, Justices of the Peace, in the Magistrate’s Count yesterday. Bote accused pleaded not guilty after depositions bad been taken. Ball was allowed. Mr M. G. L. Loughnan appeared for Paintin and Mr R. G. Blunt for Walker. The taking of depositions began last week when 13 prosecution witnesses were heard, and five witnesses were heard yesterday. Government analyst, said he examined a substance taken from the keyhole at a efcrongroom door in Lane, Neave, and Wanklyn'B offices, and found it was gelignite. He also examined two brass ban. On one bar he found traces of black, grey and green paint, corresponding in colour to severed deed and cash boxes which had been forced open. In one cash box he found traces of brass.
A pair of black boots had an unusual pattern which be had not seen before, said Mr Alcorn. The pattern appeared to be identical with a pattern found on a large deed box. On a pair of shoes be found a stain where material had been washed off. When analysed the material was found to be gelignite. Detective Bernard James Reston said Paintin denied having prepared the strongroom door for a “blow." He claimed aU money in his possession was Ms own. Detective-Sergeant James Percy Cromer said Walker admitted he knew the “layout" of the premises but he denied being on the premises on the night of the alleged offence. (Before Mr A. P. Stair, SM.) FINED £2O On five changes of misapplication of P.A.Y.E. tax amounting to £l6B 10s 8d between October 20, i 960, and Aped 20, 1961. Thomas Irons Fish was convicted and fined a total of £2O. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
TAX OFFENCES
On charges of failing to furnish returns of income convictions were entered and fines imposed as follows: William Quigley, £2; Walter Erie Radford, £2; Noel Bernard Renn eM, £ 10; Leslie Roberts, £5; Treasure Chest, Ltd., £2; Byron Wilson Whiteley, £4; Bryce Duncan Williamson (two charges), £3O on each; Thomas Hartley Peary, £4; Hay Brothers (two charges) £3 on each, and Aubrey Hay, £3; Alexander Hay, £3; Archie Richard Mathers, £6.
HYDATIDS ACT BREACHES On charges of failing to comply with the Hydatids Act, the following offenders were fined:— Dennis H. Bailey, £5; Brian Bteteb, £3; John Hutchison, £3; PbiHippa Lohrey, £1; Alan Reginald Perry, £5. REMANDED On a charge of breaking and entering premises at 83 Geraldine street on January 29 with intent to commit a crime, Kathleen Sheard, aged 31, a secretary, was remanded until February 6. Bail was allowed. A man, whose name was suppressed, was remanded on bail until February 8 on charges of being found drunk in a public place and using insulting language in a public place. The offences are alleged to have occurred on January 30, A man whose name was suppressed was remanded on bail to February 1 on a charge of attempting to induce the commission of an indecent act art New Brighton on November 30. Jame* Tuhikarama, alias James Rongo, aged 22, a workman, was remanded to Sunnyside Hospital until February 13 for observation under the Mental Health Act
