St. Helena
Sir,—As the reviewer cd "Islands Time Forgot” I am quite prepared to admit that there may be some justfrestion tor the criticism expressed by Sally Stonehouse, but must point out that the book is a travekmue, and a reviewer is bound by considerations of space to touch only on the highlights of the many places visited. In my view the historical aspects of St. Helena were of greater general interest than the sociological condition* prevailing today. “Flourishing” in this case was intended to denote the condition of being rooted, in so far as the population was concerned. As for the phrase “notable cuisine,” the author, while intimating that the hotel was very small, commented on the excellence of its meal*, and. a* he is a much-travelled person he should presumably know He did say that the children were undersized, but this opened up a subject I had not time to explore. Perhaps your correspondent might utilise her leisure to read the book.—Yours, etc., YOUR REVIEWER January 29, 1963.
