Doctors’ Receipts
Sir,—Under the present system used by most doctors the patient receives an account after medical attention. When he pays this account he receives a receipt which has to be posted to the Health Department with the claim form for refund. This receipt is not returned to the patient The payment voucher when cashed is kept by the Post Office. The patient therefore hall no legal proof of rayment first place. It B possible therefore to be billed twice by. mistake for the same visits. Would it not be possible either for the Health Department to return the receipt with the refund voucher, or for the account ti. be receipted in duplicate, one copy for the department and one for the patient to keep?—Yours, etc,, PUZZLED.
•anuary 21, 1963. [The deputy Medical Officer of Health (Dr. R. B. Cosshan) said: “The system widely used by doctors is to note the account with the number of the receipt for the patient’s record of payment The original receipt signed by the doctor or his agent is required by the department for audit purposes. However, a certificate giving the details on the receipt is available on request"]
