Mid-Canterbury Oil Survey

Seismic drilling operations by 8.P.-Shell and Todd Petroleum Development, Ltd., moved this week to the Seafield district of Mid-Canter-bury, in the same general area where many bores were sunk in an effort to find oil about half a century ago. The bores are being made 60ft deep and half • mMe apart along a line drawn to Fairton from the beach opposite the end of Seafield road. From Fairton the line will run to Westerfield and thence to Mount Somers and probably into the ’ Ashburton gorge.

Until last week the drillers were in North Canterbury,

where they started work in early December. They drilled bores a quarter-mile apart from Katapoi to Oxford, with an extension acroae the Ashley river (111 bores in all), and M bores at the same interval from Amberley beach to Brown mountain.

The seismic work tn Canterbury is expected to take abxit six months.

A spokesman for the company said yesterday he could give no indication yet of the prospects of finding oil. ss the results had to be collated and then submitted to the company’s overseas principals for evaluation.
