LAWN TENNIS N.Z. Universities' Team At Bathurst

SYDNEY, January 29. Members of the touring New Zealand universities* tennis team acquitted themselves well in the annual Australia Day week-end tournament played at Bathurst.

R. N. Hawkes won the Carillon City men’s singles championship, beating his team-mate, J. B. Souter, in the final, and several other New Zealanders also reached the 'HnsaiT' stages 'at their events. The score in the final was 34, 6-3, 6-0 to Hawkes. Playing on unfamiliar loam surface courts, the New Zealand men surprised by gaining three of the four semifinal places. In the quarterfinal matches, Hawkes, seeded fifth, beat the third seeded player and 1961 title-holder, M. Callaghan (Sydney), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Souter beat the Bathurst champion, J. Cooper, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The number three New Zealand man, B. D. Young, secured the best win when he defeated the secondseeded German Davis Cup player, H. Elsenbroich, in a grand display, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Passing Shots Young’s fine passing shots and angled returns kept the initiative from the German in the third set Elsenbroich has had much experience in Continental hardcourt competition and is highly rated in Europe. In the semifinals, Souter beat the topseeded Sydney player, G. Pares. From 0-6, 0-3 down, Souter made a grand recovery to win, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Hawkes beat Young in the other semi-final, 7-5, 6-1, after surviving several set points in the first set and went on to beat Souter in a final in which both players were a little fatigued. L. J. Walpole lost to Elsenbroich, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round and reached the quarter-finals of the special singles event for players who were nbt seeded in men’s singles. Meritorious Win Miss C. Drummond continued her good form to reach the final of the Carillon City women’s singles. She scored a meritorious win over 16-year-old Miss C. Sherriff, the

second seeded player, in a quarter-final Miss J. Blackman, who is rated in the top six women in Australia, won thia title by beating Miss Drummond in the final. The other New Zeeland women. Misses S. Sutton, R. Potter, A. Mitchell, and B. Tietjens, all lost three-set matches in the first round. Miss Tietjens reached the semi-finals of the women’s special singles. Mias Mitchell was runner-up in the girls’ singles event She beat Miss Sherriff in a long semi-final and lost to the New South Wales under-19 champion. Miss J. McKay, in a hardhitting final Doubles The New Zealanders were less successful in the doubles events. Souter and Hawkes lost 6-4, 6-8, 6-8, to the eventual winners. Pares and J. Smith, in a men’s doubles semi-finaL and Souter and Miss Drummond lost their mixed doubles semi-final which was played late in the evening under lights. Hawkes and Miss Sutton lost a long mixed. doubles quarter-final which went to 14-12 in the third set
