SEARCH FOR PLANE ENDS
Pilot Walks 60 Miles
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), January 27.
A 24-year-old pilot and a 16-year-old Eskimo boy today walked into the northern Quebec settlement of Fort Chimo to end one of the biggest air searches ever conducted in Canada’s north. The two reached Fort Chimo after a 60-mile trek in below-freezing temperatures through rugged Arctic country to report that six others aboard a missing plane were alive and well.
The plane had been missing for a fortnight. The plane, a Norseman aircraft owned by Wheeler Airlines, disappeared on a 150mile flight on January 13 from Payne City to Fort Chimo, about 800 miles north of Quebec City, Canadian Press reported. The single-engined plane was equipped with skis and carried emergency supplies, including a stove, a tent and food.
Royal Canadian Air Force headquarters here said a skiequipped plane would be sent at first light tomorrow to pick up the six other passengers. The plane was down immediately south of Leaf Lake, north-west of Fort Chimo at the foot of Ungava Bay. Canadian Press said search planes logged hundreds of hours and thousands of miles in the search for the plane.
