BEDS THAT SHAKE
(N.Z. Press Association)
WESTPORT, Jan. 29.
There are no hotel beds in Westport, according to a South Island hotel bed survey by the Tourist and Publicity Department.
But in fact there are more than 100 beds which could be made available in the local hotels, should the demand come for them at any time.
The survey, in map form, has roused the
Buller Chamber of Commerce to action and it has protested to the Departinent concerning the
omission—an omission so great that Westport is not even mentioned or pinpointed on the map. The omission may be explained by one of the town’s important statistics.
A sharp earthquake on Sunday brought the number of “shakes” registered in the district since the destructive earthquakes last May to almost 1200.
