OLD HOME FOUND

U.S. Visitor’s Search

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. An American visitor today found with some difficulty an old house in Pensonby, Auckland, where he lived as a schoolboy nearly 60 years ago. The visitor, Dr. Russell Newling, a dental surgeon, has been making a two-day sentimental visit to the city to see his old boyhood haunts and friends. The task proved far from easy, for in 60 years much had changed Sawmills, one on the waterfront not far from the house in Hachett street, had disappeared. Gullies had been filled In behind the house, motorway approaches formed, the harbour bridge erected and pleasure craft lay in St Mary’s Bty where Dr. NewLing fished the sandbars from a small boat. Yet, in spite of the vanished old landmarks and the appearance of the new, he was able to identify the street and recognise the old house. Dr. Newling left Auckland in the Mariposa for Australia today.
