Australian Youth Group On Tour Of New Zealand

A party of 28 Australians arrived by air in Christchurch yesterday at the start of a month’s tour of New Zeeland. The group of 28 includes 16 girls, their ages range between 15 and 24, and the tour has been arranged by the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, Victoria, and New Zealand Rotary Clubs. In charge of the tour Is Mr K. Inglis, a former president of the Warrnambool Rotary. Club and the originator of the scheme. Assisting him is Mrs G. Cole. Mr Inglis said the idea started with a project called “Trains of Knowledge,” in which the Rotary club arranged train-loads of Victorian secondary school children to visit the main cities

i This led to "Buses of Knowledge’’ going even ; further afield, and now to "Planes of Knowledge" I which took the young persons i out of the country and, it was I hoped, would help internaI tional relations. Those on the New Zealand tour came from all walks of life, and it was hoped this would be the first of many similar tours to different - countries, Mr Inglis said. Those on the tour paid their 1 own expenses, and were billeted at the homes of New Zealand rotarians in the different cities. The party will stay in ' Christchurch until Wednesday morning, when they leave for Dunedin They will then go to Invercargill, the West Coast, Blenheim and Picton and on to the North Island They will spend about two weeks in each island.
