Visit To Little Malaya
The Chief of the Army Staff (Major-General L. W Thornton) is expected at Wigram by air this morning to make a short visit to Burnham Military Camp and to Little Malaya, near Oxford, where the territorial 3rd Infantry Brigade Group is holding exercises. He is expected to return to Wellington by air tomorrow morning.
The brigade group, which has completed one week's annual training at Burnham, moved in convoy on Sunday afternoon to Lake Lyndon, where it spent the night. At first light yesterday morning it moved to Little Malaya. Major - General Thornton will see the infantry engaged in jungle clearing exercises and all other sections of the group simulating field conditions. The exercises, which will conclude on Thursday, are under the command of Colonel T. Hegglun, of Blenheim, the deputy commander of the group.
Close Finishes.—The New Caledonian cyclist, G. Gastaldi. had to produce his best form to beat the Auckland junior champion, V. Newlove. in two special challenge sprint heata at Papatoetoe last night. Newlove was beaten by only hah a length in the first heat and a length in the second. —(P.A.)
