Obituary

Mrs R. E. Gregory

Mrs Ruby Ethel Gregory, who died in Christchurch yesterday, spent many years as a hostess in hotels managed by her husband, Mr L. M. Gregory. She was hostess to the Queen Mother, the King and Queen of Thailand, Lord and Lady Mountbatten and two Governors-General, Lord Cobham and Sir Bernard Fergusson. With her husband, Mrs Gregory spent 37 years in hotel life in Christchurch. After Mr Gregory had retired from being licensee of the Oxford Hotel his services were sought by the leading hotels of the city as a relieving licensee. It was in the Clarendon Hotel and United Service Hotel that Mrs Gregory had her chance to show her taste in furnishings and decorations of rooms for distinguished guests, and to be an unassuming but efficient hostess to some of the city’s most important visitors. Mrs Gregory is survived by her husband and three sons, Messrs Noel Lloyd and Paul Gregory.
