(NJt. Press Association) NELSON, January 28. The first steps in the formation of a new athletic centre covering athletic clubs in the Nelson, Marlborough, Westport and Greymouth districts were taken after the Mahar Cup meeting in Nelson on SaturDelegates from these districts discussed the possibilities of breaking away from the Wellington and Canterbury centres to form their own.
Although cautious about committing their clubs, the delegates generally favoured a new centre. They decided to hold a further meeting at which individual clubs’ views could be expressed The main reason for seeking a new centre was that all the clubs were geographically Isolated from their parent bodies in Wellington and Christchurch, said Mr J. E. Sharland, the Mahar Cup secretary. “The clubs have been running what is almost a centre championship in the Mahar Cup contest for the last 30 years and this background must favour the. formation of a new body.” he said.
