Monte Carlo Rally Carlsson Wins For Second Time
(N^J’.A.-Reuter— ■Copyright) MONTE CARLO, January 26. Erik Carlsson, aged 33, the blonde Swede, became the first driver for 30 years to win the Monte Carlo Rally twice in successive years.
He drove his little red Swedish Saab into first place 22 pedate ahead of Pauli Toivonen, of Finland, in a Citroen. Third was the FinnishBritish combination of Raima Aaltonen in a Morris Mind-Cooper, another 40 points away. Carlsson had 2992 penalty points, Toivonen 3014, and Aaltonen 3055. The three placingß have been officially confirmed. Sweden gained a double placing when blonde Mrs Ewy Roeqvist snatched the women’s cup from her Stockholm rival, Miss Salvia Osterberg, by a bare 13 points. Both also started from Stockholm—Mrs Rosqvist in a German Mercedes and Miss Ostenberg in a Swedish Volvo.
Pauline Mayman and
Valerie Domleo, driving a Morris Mini-Cooper from Paris, were third. Carlsson had less than 10 paints lead before today’s final test—three laps of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix drouit.
The Saab proved handier and faster than the bigger, heavier Ciitroeon over the tortuous ‘‘round-the-houses” course.
Citroen, however, placed four cars in the first seven places and won batih the team awards.
The Morris Mini-Coopers had two in the first six in the general classification. The Citroen driver, Paddy Hopkirk, of BeMast, third last year, again proved the best British finisher, taking sixth place. Of tiie 13 class awards, British entries took six, Germany and Finland two each, and Sweden, Austria, and Norway one each. The British took four of the five awards in the grand touring car class. Arctic conditions took a heavy toll of the 286 starters.
