Smart Move, Back On Flat, Wins Hcp.

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, January 28.

Reverting to the flat after a successful hurdling debut a couple of days before, Smart Move lasted a solid mile and a quarter to take the W. S. Spence Handicap by a long neck at Ellerslie today. -

Before he won the Otahuhu Hurdles on Saturday, Smart Move had been right out of form. With the jumping his trainer, J. H. W. Brown, has given him at Takanini he seems now to have a new lease of life.

Smart Move is a six-yeaf-old gelding by Fly-Half from Desire. The year before last he won the Te Awamutu Cup, but otherwise he has done nothing of much account since getting himself from hack company. In the W. S. Spence Handicap he showed fair pace and then, in a hard finish, any amount of stamina. The 7/8 favourite in a field of 12, Smart Move became very prominent behind the front runners, Jovic and Blue Heather, as they made the turn into the straight Half a furlong out he had Jovic’s measure, and he clung to a narrow lead from High Mark, which came at the last moment with a brilliant dab along the rails. High Mark was the sixth favourite each way and Jovic was 2/2. Taumai, the popular

way with backers, was a* disappointment and only sixth. Both High Mark and Taumai come from D. J. Arnott's stable at Te Aroha, but as they race in different ownerships, they were not bracketed on the totalisator. After the front horses had run themselves out at a fast pace, Kildaro came on gamely to take the second leg of the TAB. double clearly from Terrorist and Shakespeare.

An aged chestnut mare, by Pride of Kildare from Lady Hero, Kildaro had been out of winning form although she had managed a few minor platings recently. In the Devonport Handicap she kicked right away from Terrorist in the last 100 yards to win by a length and a quarter. On the win-and-place, Kildaro was 6/4. paying £lO 4s and £2 14s fid, and in the double with Smart Move she made a return of £2OO 19s fid for £l. There were 991 winning doubles tickets (5s units), of which 321 were held on the course.

Terrorist was the each-way favourite for the Devonport Handicap and considerably better than the next best backed. Pipe Dream, which Lardly raised a gallop. In the finish he was one of the last three.

The weather was hot and humid and the going fast The attendance was 14,366. against 12.994 last year. The totaiisator, on-course, nandled £147,450 10s. including £32,335 10s on doubles, compared with last year’s £ 140.076 10s. The total investments for two days were £464331 ss, against £441.690 10s last year. TO FRONT Jovic dashed to the front straight away in the W. S. Spence Handicap from Smait Move and ran to the mile a couple of lengths in front Dolamars moved into second by about a length from Smart Move, Vivian, and Grasher. Atlas dropped to last, just behind Taumai and Blue Heather With six furlongs to go Jovic was out by a length and a half, going freely. A tittle further on Blue Heather joined him and with five to ran she went ahead. Passing the half-mile, the order was Blue Heather by a length and a half from Jovic. which had a length or so on Dolamars. Smart Move. Gauntlet. Grasher and Atlas. Hgh Mark was next Blue Heather kept command into the straight but in no time she gave way again o JovK Smart Move was going strongly close behind, and Dolamars and Gauntlet showed up in the Middle. ,’ovic had a hard. struggle with Smart Move before he gave in. Until the last few strides he looked certain to be secon I High Mark then came with a great late un on the inside which al) but got her to the front A length after Jovic came Summer Morn, fifth Gauntlet was next then Taumai, Atlas, Grasher. Blue Heather, and Dolamars. AWAT FAST Bonnie Dee and Corador went away very fest in the

Devonport Handicap to lead Star Countess, Fair Merit, Kitty Kildare, Terrorist, and Tonnod. Pipe Dream began scratchily right at the back. Nearing the three furlongs. Bonnie Dee just led Corador. Kitty Kildare was all but with the first two and Tormod and Terrorist came close. Kildaro was standing the leaders a fair start, and Pipe Dream was so far behind as to be out of the race.

Bonnie Dee kept a length clear of Corador and Terrorist into the straight. Corador soon gave ground and with a furlong and a half to go Bo inie Dee was overtaken by Terrorist. Kildaro began to improve.

Terrorist came clear and looked likely to win, but with less than half a furlong to run Kildaro began to close on him and she continued a big run to win going away by a length and a quarter. Terrorist was easily second by a length and a quarter from Shakespeare. Bonnie Dee was fourth, shading Fair Merit, Tormod. and Kitty Kildare. The last three were Pipe Dream, Star Countess, and Paye Gold. Results:— JANUARY HANDICAP, £800: two-year-olds; fit.— 2/2 FYFE (1) 9-0 G- F.
