R.N.Z.A.F. Mercy Mission

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 28,

The first Pacific mercy mission of the year was successfully completed by the R.N.Z.A.F. yesterday when a Sunderland flying-boat of No. 5 Squadron landed at Lauthala Bay, Fiji, with a critically ill patient from Kambara Island, about 230 miles south-east of Suva. The Sunderland, captained by Flight Lieutenant P. J. McKay, of Whangarei, flew to Kambara yesterday morning and landed back at Lauthala Bay early in the afternoon. The patient, Viliame Calu, was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. A release from the R.N.Z.A.F. says that in 1962, Sunderland flying-boats from No. 5 Squadron were diverted from anti-submarine reconnaissance—their primary task —to undertake mercy missions at least 33 times. Most missions were to islands in the Fiji group.
