Frigate Otago Leaves To Escort Royal Yacht

AUCKLAND, January 28. Carrying three and a half tons of New Zealand food for the Royal yacht Britannia. H.M.N.Z.S. Otago left Auckland this morning tor Fiji where it will take up escort duties for the coming Royal visit. The food, which fills half of the frigate's total supply storage space, comprises 40001 b of meat, 7501 b of bacon. 4001 b of chicken, 31201 b of cheese, 5601 b of butter and 10001 b of quick-frozen vegetables.
The Otago will rendezvous
with the Britannia at Lautoka on Friday. It will be the sole guard ship for the Royal yacht for 16 days. The frigate will escort the Britannia on her three-day voyage from Suva to Waitangi, and around the New Zealand coast until the yacht leaves Dunedin on February 16. The Otago is filling a role a New Zealand ship gets only once in 10 years.' She is carrying a full crew of 225, six sea cadets and several naval reservists. The Otago, commanded by Commander J. F. McKenzie, left the harbour early to avoid yachts competing in the Anniversary Day regatta.
