ICEBREAKER DAMAGED
The unusually thick sea ice at McMurdo Sound this season is continuing to inflict a heavy ton on the ships supplying the United States base •nd those engaged in keeping a channel clear. The latest casualty is the United States Navy icebreaker Edisto, which has a broken crankshaft in one of its main engines. About five other ships have been damaged earlier this season, most of them fouling the ice with their propetiers. The twin-screw Edisto is expected to continue to operate on its remaining five sound engines, although its work will be limited. Repair* will not be attempted u .til the vessel returns to th* United States. >
