BURIED BY SLIP

Man Escapes Injury (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 28. “I was just lucky," said a Ministry of Works employee after he had been buried under a slip on the main north highway between New Plymouth and Mokau this morning. He is Patrick James Joyce, of Ranfurly street. New Plymouth. He was operating an excavator on a corner of the highway on the northern side of Mt Messenger.

About 20,000 yards of papa rock slid forward 30 feet to where Mr Joyce was working. A truck driver shouted a warning but it was too late for Mr Joyce to get completely clear. “I saw it coming and tried to jump clear, but fell the wrong way,” he said tonight. Two workmates and passing motorists dug desperately for half an hour to get Mr Joyce clear. He worked again this afternoon.
