The Right Dress For Royal Occasions

The 1963 Royal visit to New Zealand will be more informal than previous ones in many respects, including dress for Royal occasions. The Queen does not wish anyone, especially women guests, to be put to unnecessary expenses in buying special clothes for occasions during the visit. For instance, it is known she would not object to a woman guest wearing a short dress at an occasion where a long dress would normally be worn, if the expense of buying a long dress proved unacceptable. Short, afternoon dresses will be correct wear for garden parties and other daytime assemblies. Women guests at such functions should always wear hats. Gloves are not necessary for daytime, however, nor neeu those worn be white. If gloves are worn they should not be taken off before the wearer is presented

to the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh. Women who have long gloves should wear them at formal evening functions where long dresses are worn. Men’s Dress Dress for men will be generally informal, for most occasions a lounge suit. The only occasion during the day calling for formal dress will be the opening of Parliament but, evbn then, full morning d.ess has not been prescribed. A short black jacket and s‘riped trousers or lounge suit will be correct. The only occasion during the whole visit calling for full evening dress (white tie with decorations) will be the investiture in the Wellington Town Hall. Even then a black tie will be acceptable. Fm most other evening occasions, including those, at which the Queen will wear a tiara, the dress for men will be black tie without decorations.
