BUYING MEAT IN BULK
Deep Freezers Save Money
Deep freeze cabinets are helping many housewives in the United States economise on meat buying, according to Professor Everett Everson, of Michigan State University, who is visiting New Zealand at present to familiarise himself with wheat research.
By buying half or a whole side of beef at a time, the meat was much cheaper, he said. The sides were already made up into cuts and packed for freezing aid could be bought in bulk for about 42 cents per lb. If the beef were bought in smaller and separate cuts the costs could be from 45 cents per lb for the cheapest cuts to a dollar and 5 cents for the dearest. The deep freeze was also used for storing bread and his wife bought about 30 loaves at a time from a bakery about six miles away which still produced the oldstyle bread he preferred. In spite of the ready availability of bread and the ease of storage many farm housewives in the United States still made their own bread, he said.
