Signs Of Early
Man Found
Evidence of the early presence of man has been found in a moa swamp at Poukawa, a few miles from Hastings. Bones recovered from the swamp were examined by the recorder of collections at the Canterbury Museum 'Mr R. J. Scarlett) in December. In the report on his investigations Mr Scarlett said It was probable the pumice layer over the moa bone deposit was part o (the same flood which had previously been carbon dated at 160 A.D. Evidence of man included a slab of wood which had been cut with stone tools, two small adzed pieces, a split moa skull, and several moa bones which appeared to have been worked by man, Mr Scarlett said.
