War Scene Wins At Odds Of 99 To 1

War Scene won the Tawera Handicap at Hororata on Saturday at long odds for h» Yaidhurst owner-trainer, N. E. Browne. He was the 16/16 favourite of 17 and paid £99 4s and £23 16s 6d for a win-and-place. War Scene followed Stolen Moments till the home turn. He took the lead two furlongs and a half out and lasted to hold off Surf by half a neck.

The favourite, No Trumps, was three lengths back third She held that place throughout the race. Thera was a small gap then to Polydorus which was followed in by Roydon Chief and CourteUa.

War Scene created the biggest surprise of the meeting but the outstanding perform-

ance of the day was recorded by Uteena, the Malvem Handicap winner.

Uteena added another 48 yards to her 24-yard handicap when she broke with nine furionps to go. Her chance at teaching a place looked hopeless six furtonpi out but a determined ahow of stamina in the last half mile enabled her to get up to win by a head.

Maiden pacers and improvers were liberally catered for throughout the programme. The Selwyn Handicap, run in two divisions, and the Snowden Handicap were both for non-winners Supporters of the La RnoasRadiant Meadow bracket in the Selwyn Handicap were liberally rewarded Radiant Meadow led throughout the first division and La Roesa finished strongly from a trailing position to win the second division. The combination was the 4/1 favourite of 24 but paid £8 IQs 8d and £3 14s for a win-and-place. The Snowden Handicap resulted in a comfortable win for the 17 to 1 chance Squire. He trailed Officious Piper to the straight and outfiniahed the pacemaker in the last furlong.

Pharoah won hie third race in succession for his Methven owner-trainer. G McKendry. when he outclassed 18 rivals in the Glendoce Handicap Ha ran to the front on the home turn and did not have to be driven out to keep beyond challenging distance. Adio Star improved a very sound record for Mr W. F. Woolley in the first diviaion of the A. J Harris Memorial Handicap He improved three places to join Young Garry in front at the straight entrance and ran the race out soundly to gain his second successive win.

Disperse Improved on two minor placing! at her two previous starts this season to win the second division of the Harris Memorial. She ran on the outside in the third line till the home turn, worked into a challenging position early tn the run home and had the result in safe keeping a furlong out
