Summer Flower Show At New Brighton
In spite of adverse weather late last week, entries in the New Brighton Horticultural Society’s summer flower and vegetable show which was held in the South Brighton Community Centre during the week-end, showed an increase of about 100 on last year. Although entries in the gladioli and dahlia sections were down, entries in the vegetable sections reached a record 156, and the overall entry figure stood at about 640.
Judges were pleased with the high standard shown in aJ»I sections. Mr W. A. Pollard, who judged the gladioli sections, said that this year’s entries were better than test year, though the exhibitors could have staged them to more pleasing advantage.
An eye-catching display of auratum lilies and pot plants on a tiered A-shape trestle stand was the work of Mr H. B. Hayward, a vice-presi-dent of the society. The centrepiece was provided by the Canterbury Aquarium and Pond Society which had built an indoor waterfall in the centre of the stage, flanked by three small aquaria and numerous ferns.
