LIFE SAVING Waimairi’s Lead In Title Reduced

Although the 18-point lead gained by the Waimairi club on the first day of the Canterbury Su ’ Life-saving Association's championships last month was whittled down by five points when the second championship carnival was held yesterday, the club is still a firm favourite to win the championship pennant—the premier surfing trophy in the province—for the second time in succession.

The carnival was held at Waimairi beach in a moderately strong surf. Because surfers left to search for a boy, the second race for the senior canoe championship, the junior canoe championship, the senior boat championship and the junior boat championships were all postponed. The announcer (Mr A. N. Staples) explained to the large crowd present that the saving of life on the beaches, was far more important than any competition. Waimairi now has 34 points in the championship pennant contest. North Beach and Sumner, with 11 points each, are equal second, Taylor’s Mistake had eight points. New Brighton five and South Brighton the champion club of a few seasons ago, has yet to score. Fine Win The main event on the programme. the senior belt championship, was narrowly won by T. Gaskell (Waimairi) from A. McPhail (Sumner). R. Blair (South Brighton), who won the event last season, was not competing. In the fourth heat, which was about a minute faster than any of the others, Gaskell beat the captain of the Canterbury team for the Royal carnival, A. Lee (South Brighton), comfortably. In the final, Gaskell beat G. Dann (New Brighton), who was second to Blair last season and the favourite for the event, K. Chamberlain (New Brighton) and I. Greig (Waimairi), all Canterbury representatives for the Royal carnival. Greig, the third man, was the only member of the Canterbury team who gained a place. D. Cutting (North Beach) gained a surprise win in the final of the junior belt championship. completely upsetting Waimairi’s hopes of gaining all three major placings. Cutting swam very strong through a heavy surf to beat P. Davies (Waimairi), a breasstroker. Close Contest The present New Zealand paddle board champion, K. McDonald (Sumner), narrowly won the senior paddle board championship from his clubmate, D. Quane. by about eight yards. McDonald and Quane teamed up for the senior surf ski relay and won comfortably after leading all the way. There were 20 starters. R. McDowell (Waimairi) easily retained his junior surf ski rescue championship title, finishing well ahead of the second man. L. Mclntosh (North Beach). McDowell will compete before the Queen at Mount Maunganui. Miss R. MacKenzie (South

Brighton) showed exceptional form to beat the present New Zealand women's surf race titleholder, Miss L. Harrow (Taylor’s Mistake) in the Canterbury women’s surf race championship. Although she had a commanding lead throughout, Miss MacKenzie failed to go round one of the marker buoys and a protest by one of the other competitors was upheld by the judges. Miss Harrow, who won the title last year, was announced winner.

Taylor’s Mistake A won the teams’ race from Waimairi. If the protest had not been upheld, South Brighton would have been placed equal second with Waimairi.

Winner by a nose in the senior individual beach sprint championship was R. Scott (New Brighton). Fifteen yards from the tape R. Dalton (North Beach) held a slight lead, but he stumbled just before breaking the tape. Results were: Senior Events Belt Championship (Velvin Cup, formerly held by R.
