ANTARCTIC SURVEY
Gubs’ Party Back At Base (N.Z. Press Association) SCOTT BASE. January 27. After man-hauling their sledges 130 miles and surveying 3500 square miles of new Antarctic territory in the Ross Dependency’s Victoria Land mountains, the Federated Mountain Clubs' survey and geological party arrived back at Scott- Base last night. Two members of the eight were picked up by an American aircraft from their Tucker Glacier camp, 400 miles north of Scott Base, while a reconnaissance
flight was being carried out last Tuesday. The other six had to wait until yesterday for the weather to clear. The aircraft attempted to reach them last Wednesday, but low cloud turned it back.
The men are all members of New Zealand clubs affiliated to the Federated Mountain Clubs. They were on the first expedition to be organised by the federation through the Antarctic division of the D.S.I.R.
The party was led by Mr J. M. Miller, a surveyor, of Wellington. Others in the party were Messrs G. Holdsworth (Christchurch), deputy-leader, P. C. Le Couteur (Auckland), geologist; F. R. Pearson (Haast), surveyor; R. Lloyd (Wellington): I. Joice (Christchurch); and J. Hay ton (Wellington), field assistants.
