HENS STOLEN BY HUNDREDS
500 Pullets On
On? Farm
(N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU. Jan. 27.
Thefts of up to 500 pullets have been reported to the Department of Agriculture’s poultry farm instructor at Oarnaru, Mr J. Jones. They have been widespread.
Mr Jones said the theft from one North Otago farm of 500 pullets, at point of lay, represented an absolute loss of £5OO. Several other poul-try-keepers had between 100 and 200 pullets stolen. In flocks of 2000 to 3000, such losses were not readily noticed, but they had been discovered recently when hens were being housed. Mr Jones has advised farmers to report their losses to the police and to take stringent measures to safeguard their poultry. Dogs would be useful, and warning devices could be installed, he said.
He believes it is the work of organised gangs who use trucks and sell the poultry outside the district.
Similar thefts have occurred in other years, but the latest incidence is “particularly bad.”
