ROWING Avon Dominates Akaroa Regatta

The Akaroa regatta. Canterbury’s first status regatta of the season, which was held on Akaroa harbour on Saturday, was dominated by crews from the Avon Rowing Club. Entered in 14 of the 17-evcnt programme, the dub gained seven wins and three thirds. A new trophy for eight-oared crews, the K Rhodes Challenge Cup, was also won by the club for its victory in the open eights event. Crews were hampered by a strong cross wind resulting in choppy waters breaking over the sides and stems of the boats. Crabs were common. In the novice pairs Timaru, leading by several lengths, was unlucky to catch a crab which sent both members overboard, capsizing the boat as they went. Canterbury was unfortunate enough to have rigger trouble with one of its boats and was forced to scratch from several events. Both the eight oar races were won by the Avon club’s maiden eight, although an accident to one of its crew meant both the inclusion of a new man and a rearrangement of seating. The Timaru crew of N. Taylor. P. O’Driscoll G. Low and D Rasmussen, put up a fine showing. Winning the youths* fours by half a length from Union, after a hard tussle for most of the distance, the Timaru crew was on the water for the junior fours one race later. It had a comfortable two lengths win over Canterbury. The closest finish of the day was in the open eights race. Crews from Avon, Union, Akaroa and Canterbury dubs were entered, bat it soon developed into a battle between Avon and Union. It was anyone's race almost to the finish when Avon, with a finishing burst, drew away to win by about a canvas. Canterbury rowed home into third place about four lengths behind Union. Results:—
