Pensioner flats had a double purpose—they provided homes and allowed the tenants to keep their independence, said the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) on Saturday. He was opening the £40,000 pensioner flats built by the Takapuna City Council in Gordon avenue, Milford. Mr McKay said that independence waa most important to aged people, and they should be able to keep it as long as possible Pensioner housing was Alling a great need in the community today. Although the Government was doing its utmost to help, the provision of flats was the responsibility of local authorities.
