HALBERG’S FAST MILE TIME
Tuning-Up Race For Relay (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. M. G. Halberg won a handicap mile race without undue srtrain in the excellent time of 4min 4.4 sec in Auckland on Saturday. He was running the race as a trial for the 4 x mile -elay contest against the Oregon University world record-holders on Wednesday night. ‘"That’ll do fine,” said Halbet®, well satisfied with his run. He added that he hoped to run 4min 2sec. possibly one second faster, in the relay. Also at the meeting Miss D. Porter equalled her own New Zealand 75 yards record of B.4sec, However. the time will not be recognised as it was a handicap race.
Snell’s Best This Season (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Running off scratch. P G. Snell won the 880 yards in Imin 47.4 sec—faster than his Perth Empire Games gold medal run —at Upper Hutt on Saturday. He reeled off a first lap of 32.45ec. and, on a track that was exceptionally fast, there was the prospect of a very fast time This was not to be, however, because Snell eased up once he had gathered in the short-limit man. It was his fastest time this season. It was a magnificent performance. and his time suggests that he will be at hi» peak for the race against the Oregon University relay team at Auckland on Wednesday.
