DIPLOMAT IN RUSSIA
Accused Man Leaves (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, Dec. 14. The Assistant American Agricultural Attache in Moscow, Mr Rodney W. Carlson, who was accused earlier this week by the Russians of dealing with an alleged Russian spy, voluntarily left the Soviet Union today. Mr Carlson was accused by Soviet authorities of having communication with Mr O. V. Penkovsky, a Russian scientific worker whose arrest was announced on December 11, the Associated Press said. The Embassy gave no reason for Mr Carlson's departure, but it was believed the Embassy felt his effectiveness as a diplomat had been impaired. It w'as also felt his safety was in danger.
